Did you just get approved for a Capital One Venture X card? You may be wondering if you can start making purchases before your physical card arrives in the mail. After all, new cardholders need to spend $10k in 6 months to earn the Venture X’s massive 100k signup bonus (worth $1,000 points).
As someone who was approved for a Venture X card right before Christmas, I was eager to begin using the card as soon as possible. After exploring Capital One’s app features, I have positive news to share with new or prospective cardholders.

What is a virtual card number?
A virtual card number is a unique card number & security code that can be added to a digital wallet or used to make online purchases.
This virtual card number will not match your physical card’s number when it arrives, but it is linked to the same account.
Does Capital One offer virtual card numbers?
Yes, I was pleased to see that my Capital One app featured virtual card numbers for both my Venture & Venture X cards.
Clicking into this app feature will provide you with all of the following information required to set up online payments without the physical credit card:
- Virtual Card Number
- Expiration Date
- CVC/Security Code
What can I use a virtual card number for?
Instead of having to wait for a physical credit card to arrive in the mail to start on your minimum spend requirement, a virtual credit card allows you immediate access to the purchasing power of your new account.
You can use a virtual card number to make online purchases virtually anywhere. Your virtual card number can be substituted anywhere you might key in credit card information.
CapitalOne also gave me the ability to link my virtual card number to my Amazon account so I could begin using it immediately.
Should I sign up for the Venture card or Venture X card?
The Capital One Venture card has a great signup bonus worth $600, but it offers little residual value to cardholders after the first year. I signed up for this card with the intention to downgrade it after 12 months.
The Capital One Venture X card offers an even larger signup bonus currently worth $1,000 along with a variety of perks that more than justify its $395 annual fee. For a more detailed breakdown, check out my article on whether or not the Venture X card is right for you by clicking here.
I currently hold both, but I only plan on keeping my Venture X card into next year.
