Infinity bottles represent a DIY blending method that lets home drinkers create one-of-a-kind mixes at home. As a frequent traveler, blending spirits that I collect during my travels is a unique way to capture the spirit (pun fully intended) of the places I visit.
We’re not talking about just mixing up jungle juice: bottling up a blend of similar liquors can create an intriguing spirit that constantly evolves as the ratio of elements change with time.
Infinity bottles are perfect for those who enjoy curating an at-home bar or having friends over for a drink. The beauty of this is that there is no specific formula to follow: all you have to do is start pouring similar spirits into a new bottle.
Have you already completed that first step? Voila! You’re now on your way to building a new infinity bottle.
What liquors can I use in my infinity bottle?
Infinity bottles have become very popular among whiskey drinkers, but there’s nothing stopping you from creating an infinity bottle with any type of spirit. After all, infinity bottles are just a modern interpretation of the solera systems developed hundreds of years ago by sherry-blending Spaniards.
For best results, use similar types of liquors in your bottle. Mixing various whiskeys together can produce a complex & interesting blend, but combining gin & rum won’t end nearly as well.
Personally, I started two infinity bottles of my own: one dedicated to brown rums and another bottle specifically for bourbons.
Should I use a decanter for my infinity bottle?
Picking the perfect vessel for your own infinity bottle is almost as important as picking the right liquors to put inside of it.
There is no shortage of artistic decanters on the market to choose from. Since infinity bottles evolve into prized possessions, it’s nice to put it in a unique bottle that you can proudly display for guests.
Another option is to reuse/recycle old bottles. As you collect bottles from your travels, you may come across one that has sentimental value. My bourbon-based blend is housed in an old tequila bottle that I scratched my name into at a Mexican distillery.
There’s no right answer on how to store & display your infinity bottle: this is your chance to make it as unique as you are.
How do I keep track of what is in my infinity bottle?
This step isn’t required, but I highly recommend tracking what liquors (and what volume) you add to your infinity bottle.
Theoretically, every dram you take from your infinity bottle contains a trace of every single spirit you ever added. Being able to identify the ingredients of your blend lets you build a living time capsule inside this bottle.
My new bourbon infinity bottle already includes pours from bottles that were gifted for special occasions, and I love being able to tell those stories while sipping on whiskey with friends and families.
