If you want to apply for an airline job, are in the right place. As an airline professional, I notice that even some of the most experienced travelers don’t necessarily realize just how much of an army it takes to keep an airline running.
Let me begin by asking you this: when you think of airline workers, what job titles come to mind?
Most people can easily cross off the obvious choices: pilots, flight attendants, baggage handlers, and gate agents are all key players at the airport. You might be surprised to find out that barely scratches the surface. If you want to learn more about all of the job opportunities available in the airline industry, allow me to help!
Why should you work for an airline?
If you love travel & aviation, working for an airline a dream come true. Whether you want to work on the plane, at the airport, or in an office, there are more opportunities than ever in our industry.
I am incredibly thankful to be paid to work around flying machines that fascinate me. Plus, the non-rev flight benefits allow you to take trips all around the world (especially if your airline has ZED agreements)!
There are countless job titles to choose from in the airline industry, but they all have one thing in common: our purpose is to provide the best travel experience possible to the passengers who choose our aircraft. All airline employees are responsible for ensuring a safe, reliable, and enjoyable experience for our customers.
What jobs do airlines hire for?
Anyone who has stepped foot in an airport knows that airlines hire for a wide range of customer-facing roles. Pilots, flight attendants, gate agents, and ramp agents (the people responsible for safely guiding an airlines ground operation) are all very visible to passengers.
Do you ever think about the less visible employees of your favorite airline? To operate a successful operation, countless people work behind the scenes to keep these incredibly complex flight schedules working every single day.
Airlines also need mechanics to maintain their planes, warehouse personnel to stock aircraft parts, and quality inspectors to make sure those components are safe. To support those workgroups, there are teams of engineers & planners who are responsible for maintaining reliable performance of every airplane.
Think of all the food & beverage options offered by airlines. While the physical catering is often outsourced to a third-party company, there are entire teams dedicated to deciding each month’s menu & negotiating deals with vendors & catering companies. Airlines with lounges definitely need to employ wait staff & bartenders, so add them to the list too.
Beyond the airport experience, airlines need skilled customer service personnel to help passengers make & change reservations over the phone. Tech-savvy passengers might prefer doing all of that via website or app, so airlines must employ a digital product/services team as well. Don’t forget the social media team members who build the brand’s identity online!
On top of all of that, airlines have to employ the management & support staff that any other large business would also employ: lawyers, IT specialists, schedulers, marketing gurus, custodial staff, supply chain experts, compliance teams, accountants, and virtually every other job title you can think of.
Long story short: job opportunities are plentiful in the airline industry. As of January 2024, I found 1,400+ job postings across the 28 airline career portals listed below!
What airlines are hiring right now?
The airline industry is constantly evolving, and hiring trends are tied very closely to the performance of each airline. When times are good, airlines hire nonstop to keep up with demand to expand their operations.
With so many airlines based in the US trying to capitalize on post-pandemic travel, it feels like every company is trying to hire as much talent as possible right now. Airlines hire personnel for their headquarters and at airport locations around the world, so job opportunities are geographically diverse.
